Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a compound naturally created by the body through the digestion of Indole-3-carbinol (I3C). I3C is found in high concentrations in cruciferous vegetables, including kohlrabi, watercress, radishes, collard greens, cabbage, broccoli, and kale. A phytonutrient and plant indole, DIM helps to improve antioxidant activity at the cellular level and supports estrogen metabolites.
As a supplement, DIM I3C may help protect against certain types of cancer, including breast, cervical, prostate, and colon cancer. It may also help improve outcomes when combined with other therapies for the treatment of ovarian cancer. In addition, supplementation with DIM I3C may be helpful in the treatment of some autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, and rheumatic and endocrine diseases.
DIM I3C and Estrogen Imbalance
DIM I3C supplementation assists with estrogen metabolism, specifically 2-hydroxeystrone (2-OHE), an anti-carcinogenic estrogen modulator necessary for optimal breast and prostate health. As such, regular supplementation with DIM I3C can assist with symptoms of estrogen imbalance, which may include:
- Hot Flashes
- Weight Gain
- Breast Tenderness
- Painful Intercourse
- Mood Swings
Estrogen imbalance may contribute to irregular menstruation and worsen the symptoms of PMS, such as joint and muscle pain, gastrointestinal distress, concentration problems, and general discomfort. Hormone imbalance may also contribute to PMDD, an often debilitating extension of PMS.
DIM I3C can be used on its own to address estrogen dominance or in combination with other supplements and treatment modalities, including BHRT, to address several different concerns. Combination therapies may prove most productive for individuals experiencing multiple symptoms of hormone imbalance.
