Pellet Bunching Can Harm Patient Outcomes

BHRT can be administered in several ways. Topical options such as gels and patches are common. So too are pills and shots commonly used to supply bio-identical hormones to patients dealing with the adverse consequences of perimenopause, menopause, and andropause.

A newer and compellingly effective option for BHRT is hormone pellets. Inserted through a tiny incision – typically in the gluteal region – hormone pellets slowly release bio-identical hormones over the course of several months, allowing for sustained patient results.

The number of pellets used is dependent on the individual, but up to six pellets can be placed during a single treatment. Because more than one pellet is inserted during the procedure, however, the risk of pellet bunching is possible, and this can pose a host of aesthetic and physical discomforts until they have dissolved; perhaps even long after.

Pellets are inserted with a handheld device. In some cases, pellet delivery may be uneven or fail to push the pellets deep enough, allowing for bunching and overlapping. This can result in lumps and bumps underneath the skin for several months. It can also increase risks for the development of scar tissue and result in other unpleasant aesthetic outcomes.

While some of these risks can be diminished through provider experience, having a pellet delivery tool that works to prevent bunching can help to ensure optimal patient outcomes for even the most experienced physician.
